DONA International approved birth doula course

Hello! My name is Devon, and I’m a DONA-trained birth doula. Pregnancy, labor, and childbirth are powerful and nuanced, and everyone experiences them differently. I find that parents hire birth doulas for a number of different reasons - maybe it’s your first child, or you want your partner to feel more empowered and involved in the process; you may have had a previous birth experience that was difficult or you’d like photos taken or additional care for your creature comforts - I’m here for all of that.

My philosophy as a doula is that mothers and birthing people often have everything they need within themselves, but sometimes need to be reminded of that strength. That’s where I come in! Whether we’re putting together your birth preferences, moving through labor positions, or processing complex emotions, my goal is to make sure you’re prepared and supported in both body and mind. As a doula, I work with families to create an intuitive and personalized birthing experience. Together, we’ll use techniques like massage, breathwork, movement, and more to prepare for these important moments.

In many ways, hiring a doula can be a very intimate choice. In my work, I’ll meet you where you are, and we’ll work together to make sure you’re prepared and cared for both physically and mentally through your pregnancy, labor, and postpartum period. I look forward to getting to know more about your family and your story!

A Note on Accessibility

I work to create spaces where all families feel empowered, supported, safe, and in line with their values. I also recognize that like each birth, our families are unique - I welcome all families, and all bodies, and continue to educate myself on gender-affirming, anti-racist, and equitable birth support. I also know that while having a doula’s support at your birth significantly improves birth outcomes, it’s often simply inaccessible for many families. If this is a barrier for you, I encourage you to reach out so we can discuss my options for sliding-scale birth support or other arrangements.

Testimonials

“Devon is a wonderful doula. She is compassionate, non-judgmental, caring, and one of the most down-to-earth people I’ve ever met. Devon was prompt when I needed her and knew exactly what to say or do to assist me in labor. My whole family enjoyed her visits and some of her words of wisdom really helped me through the post-partum period. Having a doula is such a blessing to your birth and I believe Devon is one of the best out there.”

"Devon was such a pleasure to work with, so generous and attentive right from our first meeting. As this was my first pregnancy had no idea what to expect neither from our doula nor the hospital, I went into this blindly. During our first informal meetup, I briefly talked about what I hoped my birth would be like and what I wished Devon could help me with.

A few months later, I went into labor 10 weeks early, without giving us time for a more in depth planning of my birthing experience through a second meeting. We texted Devon at 4am and she showed up just a few hours later, doing everything to make my birth experience as close as possible to what we had discussed in our first meeting. I could tell that she really listened to the concerns that I had expressed and she came prepared.

She was my brain, my right hand and my ally, updating both our families  who live in other countries with texts and pictures throughout the experience, setting up candles and music to create the mood that I had in mind, talking to the health team and taking notes of what medical procedures were done to make sure that I was still in the loop despite the altered state of mind that I was in. She was reassuring, present and joyful, which helped me relax. After the birth, our baby stayed in the NICU and Devon remained present and so helpful, providing resources, support and reassurance through two more meetings post-partum over the following two months. She went above and beyond in every single interaction we had with her. Devon is a GEM. If you have the opportunity to have her as your doula, seize it. You will be so thankful to have her on your team."

“We weren’t sure if we needed a doula, since this was our second pregnancy. We first met Devon during our 3rd trimester and decided that she would be a helpful member of our team based on the educational resources she offered and her supportive personality.

Devon shared multiple resources about birthing options, pain management techniques, and emotional support methods to practice before going into labor. She also helped us plan for the post-partum period by making sure we had a strong support network. We created a birth plan that outlined our preferences for as little intervention as possible. However, as our baby girl’s due date came and went, Devon was proactive about discussing induction methods and resetting our expectations. She also supported us emotionally as we worked through the disappointment that our birth wouldn’t go as planned.

During labor, Devon made sure I was as comfortable as could be, and helped me get through the most intense part of our labor. She was incredibly helpful as both my husband and I were exhausted from a long induction. We were so grateful that we had Devon by our sides to help make informed decisions during our pregnancy and labor, and achieve an unmedicated induction!”

Working with Devon as a virtual doula was a fantastic experience, she was such a great help and support person, even from a distance. The tools, educational materials and her availability in answering any questions I had, both through video chats and texts, helped me be a better advocate for myself. I was able to communicate more effectively with the medical staff at my hospital birth about their protocol, potential interventions and what to expect from them, and my desires for how I wanted to proceed.

The staff was very impressed by my knowledge, and as much research as I do on my own, I give credit to Devon for her assistance in adding to what I already knew, figuring out what questions to ask, and better understanding my options. I’m in my first week post partum and she’s continued to have wonderful advice on healing and recovery during this time. In addition to providing her knowledge and skill set, her kindness and thoughtfulness also made her wonderful to work with. I highly recommend her services!”
